Design Preis 2007

11/06/2007 Création Baumann wins the Swiss Textile Design Award

Création Baumann wins the Swiss Textile Design Award with GECKO!
After having won the red dot design award 2007 and the AIT Innovation Prize for Textile and Contract, Gecko, the latest product of Langenthal-based textile manufacturer Création Baumann has now also won an award at home. At the last Design Preis Schweiz 2007 (Design Prize Switzerland) ceremonies that took place at the concert hall in Solothurn, this unique self-adhesive textile was awarded the Swiss Textile Design Award by the Swiss Textile Federation. It is with great pleasure and pride that Philippe Baumann, CEO of Création Baumann, representing the fourth generation of the founding family, accepted this honour last Friday and stated that once again, Création Baumann was confirmed in its position as a highly innovative company in the interior decoration industry.

The Design Prize Switzerland event illustrates the significance of Swiss design by awarding prizes for extraordinary achievements in communication, fashion, furniture, interior decoration, product and textile design. 38 projects were nominated out of a total of 300 submissions and then judged by an international jury according to strict criteria. In addition to prizes awarded in the categories “Newcomer”, “Research” and “Merit”, the Swiss Product Design Award and the Swiss Textile Design Award winners were also chosen.

The Swiss Textile Design Award of the Swiss Textile Federation is the greatest commendation for Swiss textiles and is granted to products designed with focus on the use of novel materials, material combinations, functions, techniques, and procedures.

In several years of research and development, Création Baumann has created the possibility to attach fabrics directly on to glass surfaces. Thanks to a special coating, the Gecko textile offers great adhesive power. Geckos are famous for being able to scuttle headfirst across ceilings. Similarly, the GECKO fabric can be attached to any pore-free surface. To date, it has been tested and found to be particularly well suited for applications on unstructured float glass. Thanks to the fabric’s silicon-based coating, there is no necessity to apply classic adhesives. What is particularly innovative about Gecko is that - contrary to conventional films or foils - this adhesive textile can be removed and used elsewhere several times - without leaving any residues or losing any of its adhesive strength. Consequently, Gecko can be used wherever glare protection or privacy assurance are required but architectural or design specifications do not allow for the use of curtains, roller blinds, or panels.

Création Baumann first presented Gecko to a larger audience as a prototype at the 2006 Designers’ Saturday in Langenthal. The first collection was then launched for the contract market in the spring of 2007. Since this autumn, the Gecko collection is also available at retailers in Switzerland and Germany. Gecko’s international market launch has been planned for 2008.

Jury’s comment: „GECKO contributes decisively to increasing the possibilities to design glass facades and glass partitions. The self-adhesive textile makes it possible to separate private from public spaces in a myriad of different manners. Gecko is so easy to use that it is ideal for temporary applications and so perfect that it can be used for longer periods of time. It is particularly worth mentioning that the silicon-based coating can be applied to various different fabrics, thus offering tremendous potential yet to be discovered with regard to possibilities of use both practical and esthetical.”
